WHAT LICENSE IS NECESSARY TO BE SELF-EMPLOYED AS AN ELECTRICIAN?
In order to contract with the public and pull permits, your business must be licensed as an Electrical Contractor. Each Electrical Contractor must employ at least one Master Electrician. Therefore, if you are running a one-person electrical business, you must obtain both an Electrical Contractor and a Master Electrician license.
Who
is not required to be licensed?

Electrical Utilities and their employees
•
Maintenance workers doing routine maintenance
•
Homeowners or farmers working on their own property
•
Retailers installing appliances
•
Workers in coal mines or coal preparation plants
•
Workers installing or repairing low-voltage telecommunications systems
•
Manufacturers installing medical equipment
WHAT ARE THE GRANDFATHERING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LICENSES?
ELECTRICAL
CONTRACTOR
•
Two years verifiable experience as an electrical contractor.
•
Proof of $500,000 General liability insurance.
•
Proof of Worker's Compensation insurance (if required).
•
Completed application form.
•
$200.00 application fee.
MASTER
ELECTRICIAN
•
Six years verifiable experience as an electrician.
•
Completed application form.
•
$100.00 application fee.
ELECTRICIAN
•
Four years verifiable experience as an electrician.
•
Completed application form
•
$50.00 application fee.
APPLICATION FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE
What
if I don't qualify for grandfathering?
If you do not qualify
for grandfathering as a master electrician or an electrician, then you do not
meet the experience requirements for licensure. If you do not qualify for grandfathering
as an electrical contractor, you may contact the Department for information
on taking the test for an electrical contractor license.
PENALTIES
Performing
electrical work without the required license is a crime. If you hold yourself
out as an electrical contractor, master electrician or electrician without the
proper license, you may be convicted of a misdemeanor and fined from $500.00
up to $5000.00 or sentenced to

WHO NEEDS A LICENSE?

who will perform non-exempt electrical work without supervision by a licensed
electrician or master electrician.
WHAT LICENSE IS NECESSARY?

In
order to contract with the Public to perform electrical work. Only Licensed
Electrical Contractors may pull electrical permits.
MASTER
ELECTRICIAN
Each
Electrical Contractor must Employ at least one Master Electrician. Master Electricians
are responsible for all electrical work performed under their supervision.
ELECTRICIAN
All
electrical work must be performed by, or under the supervision of, a licensed
Electrician or Master Electrician. In order to work Unsupervised, an electrical
worker must be licensed as at least an Electrician.
